About this site

I’ve been using Emacs since before most people on the Internet were born. Not because I’m stubborn — though I am — but because nothing else has ever come close to doing what I need, the way I need it done.

This site is where I document what I know. configurations, workflows, the reasoning behind choices that might look strange until you understand them. Written for people who want to understand their tools all the way down, not just cargo-cult someone else’s setup.

I’m Bill Wear. retired technical writer and engineer. I’ve written documentation for NASA-adjacent projects, spent six years at canonical, and built more systems than I can remember. Emacs has been the constant thread through all of it.

The Unix philosophy is not just how I work. It’s how I think, and how I live.

If something here is useful to you, good. If you want to hire someone who can take the most complex technical material and make it accessible without dumbing it down — I’m available.
